Seven inmates who have taken music workshops in prison are granted special permission to give a concert under day release, supervised by their guard. The concert will not go smoothly, however, as a series of unexpected events leads these prisoners and their guard—who seem to have nothing in common—to discover similarities between them. Whether they are on the “good” or “bad” side of the bars, they all aspire to the same thing: to live in peace, with themselves and with others. Thanks to writing that blends humor and emotion, a fast-paced staging, and excellent musician-actors, *A l'Epreuve des Pavés!* manages to be both a full-fledged theatrical work and a genuine concert—all within a somewhat cinematic atmosphere.
Seven prisoners who have participated in music workshops in prison are granted special permission to give a concert under semi-open conditions, supervised by their guard. The concert will not go smoothly, as unexpected events unfold, and these prisoners and their guard—seemingly polar opposites—will discover they have things in common. Whether they are on the right or wrong side of the bars, they all aspire to the same thing: to live in peace, with themselves and with others. Thanks to writing that blends humor and emotion, a fast-paced staging, and excellent musician-actors, "A l'Epreuve des Pavés!" manages to be both a fully realized theatrical work and a genuine concert. All this unfolds in a somewhat cinematic atmosphere.
