Beste Cantate is a celebration of folklore and the power of costumed bodies that come together and transform. Drawing inspiration from the Dunkirk Carnival and queer imagination, eight dancers explore the subversive role of popular festivals and ask: how can we imagine a new carnival that is both festive and socially engaged? How can we redefine its contours and “celebrate carnival” today? For while carnival touches the greatest number of people on human, social, spiritual, and artistic levels, and offers a space of freedom and precious irreverence, it also has its dark sides. In response to these racist and sexist excesses, Beste Cantate draws us into a physical and collective jubilation, reinvents the farandoles, circles, processions, and rigodons (chaos) of carnival, and reclaims the positive power of this historical and cultural heritage.
