Research Lab Tour: 1 hour and 50 minutes

Kalinka explored the body, the voice, and physical materials before she began writing. Anaïs explored spaces and languages before she began writing. Kalinka discovered street theater almost by chance. Anaïs discovered playwriting almost by chance. Both are familiar with the language of film and the stage. From the moment they met, their writing resonated with one another. They exchanged their texts and recognized a shared sensibility. What connects them became clear: a common interest in family ties, in the group, and in what shapes individuals. Drawing on their experience and current events regarding changing conditions of detention, the subject of their research emerged: detention. During their weeks in residence, they will discover the realities faced by families, loved ones, and people grappling with waiting, absence, and uncertainty. The outcome of their research project will consist of presenting the striking images they have collected and connecting them to one another.

Kalinka explored voice, body, and material before she began writing. Anaïs explored spaces and languages before she began writing. Kalinka discovered street theater almost by chance. Anaïs discovered writing for the theater almost by chance. Both are familiar with the language of cinema and theater. From the moment they first met, there was a clear resonance in their writing. They read each other’s work, recognizing a shared sensibility. What connected them was clear: a mutual interest in family ties, in the wider community, in what connects people. Drawing on their experience and on news stories about detention conditions, the subject of their research was clear: detention. During a writers’ residency, they sought to uncover the experiences of families, of loved ones, of people facing waiting, absence, and uncertainty. The recreation of their research laboratory consists of presenting the striking images they have collected and linking them together.
