A straw wall separates two gardens, with a girl growing up on one side and a boy on the other. Just like their idols Romeo and Juliet, their love is impossible because of the terrible hatred that divides their fathers. But in reality, the two fathers are close friends and are feigning this hatred so that their children, tempted by the forbidden, will fall in love and marry. The wall could thus be torn down, their two estates merged into one, and (most importantly) their taxes significantly reduced. As a final ploy, they will call upon Straforel, a former failed actor who has now turned to a life of “professional kidnapping”—but… Suspense. Following Molière’s The Forced Marriage at Chalon dans la rue , welcome to this little-known gem by Rostand, where popular comedy, interactions, and music from the 2000s are once again in front of, behind, around, and with the audience.

Like their idols Romeo and Juliet, their love is impossible because of the terrible hatred tearing their fathers apart. But in truth, the two fathers are close friends, pretending to hate each other so their children, tempted by the forbidden, will fall in love and marry. The wall could then come down, their lands merged into one, and (most importantly) their taxes significantly reduced. As a final scheme, they call on Straforel, a failed actor turned “professional kidnapper,” but… To be continued. Following Molière’s "Le Mariage Forcé" at Chalon 2024, welcome to this hidden gem by Edmond Rostand, where popular comedy, playful banter, and 2000s music once again unfold in front of, behind, and alongside the audience.
