Margo Chou has dissected her attachment to the culture of the former Yugoslavia. She dressed up, trying—but never quite succeeding—to become the spitting image of her favorite Bosnian singer, Ljiljana Buttler.  She became Liliana Butter Not, like a ghostly woman with a thousand lives. She hurls unanswered questions at us, speaks of women, destinies, confinement, and inner struggle in a warmly futile quest for identity. Liliana Butter Not, a lookalike’s jam, is a lone figure on the street that addresses uprooting and the loss of identity under crushing authority. We encounter there both family and the communist, women held back as well as fragmented states.
